is proud to announce the Grand Prize winner of the

2002 Myrna W. Brown Artist Competition

 

ALEXANDER VIAZOVTSEV

Alexander Viazovtsev, born in Siberia, Russia in 1979, graduated from the Tchaikovsky Music College of Ekaterinburg, Russia, with an Honors Diploma in performance and teaching (1997). He studied at the Ural State Conservatory, Ekaterinburg (1997 - 2000), for three years. In 2000, he transferred to the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio where he is studying with Dr. Brad Garner and will complete the requirements for an Artists Diploma this spring. Alexander has participated in many Russian and International contests: the Siberian-Ural II Regional Competition in Novosibirsk, Russia, 1997 (Second Prize and a Laureate Diploma); the Moscow International Woodwind Competition, 1998 (an Honored Diploma); the First International Woodwind Competition in Tolliatti, Russia, 1998; the 33rd Woodwind Competition in Marknoykirchen, Germany, 1998; and the III International Woodwind Festival in Novosibirsk, Russia, 1999 (First Prize and Laureate Diploma with a flute quartet). He is a winner of the "2002 Frank Bowen Young Artist Competition" and The Tuesday Musical Club 2002 (Arden J. Yockey Scholarship for Woodwind). He has participated in the Dr. Roig-Francoli’s recording project (March 2002) for his new theory textbook – "Harmony in Context" - published by McGraw-Hill. Alexander also participated in many masterclasses and workshops, including those of Moscow Conservatory professors A.Korneev and Y.Dolzhikov; the FAME in New Jersey, USA, with Julius Baker; and others.

1ST RUNNER-UP:

Erinn Frechette-Foster received a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University and a Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati. She has been a member of Civic Orchestra of Chicago and has won prizes in the National Flute Association Piccolo Artist Competition, Flute Talk Competition and the Union League Civic and Arts Society Competition. She has studied with Alice Akins, Walfrid Kujala, Richard Graef, Jack Wellbaum and Bradley Garner.

2ND RUNNER-UP:

Li-Chu Huang began her training at age 12 at the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California prior to entering the Curtis Institute of Music. She is the winner of numerous awards and competitions, including the NFA High School Soloist Competition, The Young Artist Competition in Los Angeles, and the first price award of 2000 Flute Symposium in Cincinnati. She served as principal flute of The Curtis orchestra and toured with Mr. Andre Previn and Ms. Anne – Sophie Mutter in 1999, and was also a substitute performer with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She is currently a graduate student at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.
