2003 Myrna W. Brown Artist Competition

Yuki Otsuka
Yuki Otsuka began her musical education in 1996 at the Osaka College of Music where she received her bachelor degree. After studying in the Indiana University School of Music, she received her Performer Diploma in 2001. She is currently working toward an Artist Diploma at Indiana University. Ms. Otsuka has performed in solo recital thoughout Japan. Her awards include the 2000 Julius Baker Masterclass Yamaha Prize and first place at the 2001 Japanese Flute Convention Ensemble Competition in Kobe, Japan.
1ST RUNNER-UP:
Jessica Lizak holds an MM from the New England Conservatory, as a student of Fenwick Smith, and a BM from the University of Michigan, as a student of Leone Buyse and Jeff Zook. She performs as a member of the Thayer Symphony Orchestra, Hingham Symphony Orchestra, Massachusetts Flute Choir, and regularly substitutes with the New World Symphony. Jessica's recognition includes 1st Prize in the 2000 Pappoutsakis Flute Competition, 2nd Prize in the Bohemians Club of the Detroit Symphony Concerto Competition, and was selected as a Semi Finalist in the 2002 Myrna Brown Flute Competition. She has been a featured soloist with the Greater Boston Flute Festival, the performance venues include Music Academy of the West, Domain Forget, and Interlochen Arts Festival (faculty). In the fall of 2003, Jessica will begin her candidacy for a DMA at Boston University with Marianne Gedigian.
2ND RUNNER-UP:
Jocelyn Goranson, 23, is a Masters student at Rice University where she is a student of Leone Buyse. She graduated summa cum laude in May, 2002, from West Virginia University, where she studied with Joyce Catalfano. Jocelyn won the West Virginia University Young Artists Competition, performing as a concerto soloist with their orchestra in February, 2001. In October, 2002, she was invited to solo again with the orchestra on Corigliano’s Pied Piper Fantasy, with her students playing the parts of the children flutists. Jocelyn was the winner of the Collegiate Soloists Competition at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair (Flute Society of Washington) in February, 1999, the national winner of the Music Teacher’s National Association High School Woodwind Competition in March, 1998, a Yamaha Young Performing Artist in 1997, and a winner in the Pittsburgh Concert Society 1996 Young Artists Competition. Jocelyn has attended masterclass sessions with Julius Baker, Leone Buyse, Michel Debost, Brad Garner, and Robert Langevin. In the summer of 1995, she attended the Chautauqua School of Music. During the summers of 1998 and 1999, she attended the FAME (Foundation for Artistic and Musical Excellence) Festival in Lawrenceville, NJ. In 1999, she attended the Masterworks Festival in Houghton, NY. During the summers of 2000, 2001, and 2002, Jocelyn was on full-time music staff at Camp-of-the-Woods in Speculator, NY. During the summer of 2003, Jocelyn will be touring Central and South America as principal flute in the Youth Orchestra of the Americas.
