26th Annual Myrna Brown Flute Competition

The Myrna W. Brown Artist Competition is open to all flutists. NO AGE LIMIT! The winner of the competition will receive a $1,200 cash prize and be invited to appear as a guest artist at the Texas Flute Society Flute Festival in May, 2012. Second and Third place winners will be awarded $500 and $250, respectively.

Please record in stated order:
• Caprice No. 24 - Niccolo Paganini (Southern Music Co. edition, arr. Robert Cavally) Omit variations 2, 3, and 10. Take all repeats.
• Fantasia No. 6 in D Minor - Dolce movement - Telemann
Applicants must submit an unedited recording of the selections on a CD. There must be NO identification on the recording or box. Recordings will be coded and sent to a judging committee.
Recording deadline: postmarked by February 15, 2011.

Semi-final and Final Rounds:
Concerto in D minor - III. Allegro di molto - C.P.E. Bach - Piano should begin in m. 28, then cut from m. 68 to 93. Next cut from m. 137 to 160. Last cut from m. 233 to the very last m. 254. (Required piece for both rounds)
Flutists selected to the Semi-final and Final Rounds will prepare a 25-minute program of their own choosing which includes the required piece:
The Semi-final Round requires 15 minutes of music and must include the required piece.
The Final Round will be the entire program.
The program should
include pieces which reflect a wide variety of styles and periods. This may
include single movements of works, sonatas, concerti, and unaccompanied pieces.
It is not necessary to perform all movements of a single work but any
individual movement of a work must be performed in its entirety. Cuts may be
made in the accompaniment and repeats may be deleted. Entire variations may be
omitted, as long as a minimum of 75% of the piece is performed.
PROCEDURES AND DEADLINES
Application fee is $40.00. This fee is non-refundable.
Preliminary round recordings must be unedited. Each selection should be recorded individually in one performance.
Entrants are advised that the recording quality may effect results of the preliminary round.
No recordings will be returned.
Entries must be postmarked by February 15, 2011.
Semi-finalists will be notified by April 1, 2011.
Semi-finalists & finalists are responsible for the accompanist's fee. A $40 deposit will be due in advance.
Semi-finalists & finalists are responsible for their own travel arrangements and expenses.
All performances are open to the public.
All judges' decisions are final.
Flutists selected from the preliminary round must be prepared to submit their entire 25-minute program for the Semi-final/Final Rounds by April 15, 2011.
