Helen Blackburn
TMEA All-Region Tips and Tricks


Helen Blackburn is principal flutist with the Dallas Opera Orchestra. She recently retired as Artist Teacher of Flute at WTAMU and has taught previously at TCU, SFASU, UNT (adjunct), OU (sabbatical replacement), and McMurry College. Helen performs with her husband, percussionist Drew Lang, and has numerous credits with major performing arts organizations, including the the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Voices of Change, Peninsula Music Festival, Breckenridge Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival (piccolo fellow for 4 years), the Brevard Music Center, and the Chicago Civic Orchestra. Ms. Blackburn received her BM (summa cum laude) from West Texas State University and her MM from Northwestern University. Her teachers were Brad Garner, Sally Turk, and Walfrid Kujala. Helen enjoys long rambling walks with her dogs Tater and Thor, yoga, Sudoku, conquering the daily Wordle, and baking sourdough bread.
